It has been seven years since SoCal bohemian stalwart Chuck E. Weiss released his last album 23rd & Stout, a set that blends rock with vintage R&B, blues and Beat style lyrics. Weiss’ latest, Red Beans and Weiss, is another set of raw Americana. The album was primarily self-produced, although Tom Waits and Johnny Depp are also listed as producers. Highlights include: the rockabilly opener “Tupelo Joe”; the beat rap “That Knucklehead Stuff”; the 1950’s Chicago style blues “Exile on Main Street Blues”; the boogie-woogie tracks “Boston Blackie”, “Bomb the Tracks”, and “Dead Man’s Shoes.” Weiss is known in the local L.A. scene as a musician’s musician, and with Red Beans and Weiss, we can see why. – Written by JFelton
