The 21-year-old country singer/songwriter Colter Wall has a smokey baritone that evokes a seasoned and well-travelled troubadour. Wall’s self-titled debut was produced by Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell) and the set tells polished stories of murder, heartbreak and blue collar struggles set to gritty, stripped down acoustic arrangements. Album highlights include: the opening track “Thirteen Silver Dollars”; the murder ballad “Kate McCannon”; the folk blues piece “Codeine Dream”; the introspective “You Look To Yours”; and the ode to railroad travel on “Transcendent Ramblin’ Railroad Blues.” Wall is a remarkable new young talent and his self-titled debut is easily one of my favorite albums of the year. If you are into Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt, or anyone of that ilk, give Colter Wall a listen – you will not be disappointed. – Written by JFelton
