Detroit’s Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. (a.k.a. Joshua Epstein and Daniel Zott) recently released their debut four track EP Horse Power, an eclectic mix of catchy pop songs layered with synth, samplers, and drum machines. While the duo claim the latter two as hip-hop inspired, you won’t find the familiar hip-hop sounds of bass laden beats, instead the tracks lay down fusions of the psychedelic electronica, reggae rhythms, brass instruments, and folky vocals. Horse Power opens with “Nothing But Our Love”, a laid back rock song with great vocal harmony; “Vocal Chords” takes things up an notch, breaking out the horns in the chorus. Another original track, “Simple Girl”, is an upbeat ditty with Disney-esque flourishes of (literally) bells and whistles; and the EP closes with a sunny cover of the Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows”. If Horse Power is a small glimpse at what is to come on their full-length, which is scheduled for release this fall, then I’m looking forward to hearing what other tricks they have up their sleeve. – Written by JFelton
