Seattle-based singer/songwriter Damien Jurado follows-up 2018’s sparse acoustic one man performance The Horizon Just Laughed and 2019’s In the Shape of the Storm with What’s New, Tomboy? – his third straight self-produced album. What’s New, Tomboy? builds upon his last LP with the addition with organ, light drums, and bass guitar, resulting in a subdued and intimate 10 song of set country-rock, spare folk, and gentle psychedelia, over half of which consists of character sketches named for their subjects. Notable tracks include: the country-tinged “Birds Tricked Into the Trees”; the tribute song to friend and collaborator Richard Swift “Ochoa”; the psych-rock track “When You Were Few”; the enchanting ballad “Arthur Aware”; and the charming optimistic ditty “The End of the Road.” What’s New, Tomboy? is another excellent set of affecting songs from Damien Jurado that capture poignant vignettes of American life. – Written by JFelton
