It’s been eight years since Dan Auerbach’s (The Black Keys, The Arcs) excellent first solo album, Keep It Hid, and now his impressive sophomore effort is out. Waiting on a Song is a “love letter to Nashville” where he has lived since 2010, and includes a number of local musical luminaries such as John Prine and David “Fergie” Ferguson (Johnny Cash) who co-wrote seven of the albums songs. Others artists include Jerry Douglas (lap steel), Duane Eddy (guitar), Dave Roe (bass; Johnny Cash), Bobby Wood (piano; Dusty Springfield, Elvis Presley), Gene Christman (drums), and a guest appearance from Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) who plays a guitar solo on “Shine on Me.” Auerbach had about 60 songs to work with for the record but a few highlights that made the final tracklist include: the title track; a tribute to producer Rick Rubin titled “Malibu Man”; and the first single “Shine on Me”; and the Tom Petty-esque “Cherrybomb.” Right in time for summer, Auerbach has crafted the perfect, breezy, and sunshine filled pop album with Waiting on a Song. – Written by JFelton
