Daniel Martin Moore has been busy the past couple of years, making his debut two years ago with Stray Age and last year releasing Dear Companion with Ben Sollee. Kentucky-based singer Moore is out with his newest album In the Cool of the Day, his individual take on Appalachian folk and gospel songs. With the accompaniment of banjos, organs, violins and pianos, Moore reinterprets and in some cases, reinvents, traditional ballads like Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s “Up Above My Head” and G.B. Grayson and Henry Whittier’s “A Dark Road [Is a Hard Road to Travel]”. In the Cool of the Day is a fine showcase of simple songs with sparse arrangements that are alternatively somber and joyfully heartfelt. – Written by JFelton
