Canadian singer/songwriter Daniel Romano follows-up two digital-only released albums and 2017’s country psych-pop album Modern Pressure with Finally Free – a cosmic acoustic-based set that draws upon pastoral British folk and 60’s/70’s era American folk influences. To complete the effect of those eras of music, Romano recorded to a four-track Tascam cassette recorder with a single microphone, giving the album a more worn vibe. Romano’s transcendental poetry pairs well with his eclectic musical sensibilities, and in this case, Finally Free works really well. Standout tracks include: the earthy fingerpicked track “All the Reaching Trims”; the sun-drenched “Have You Arrival”; the cerebral freak-folk song “Celestial Manis”; the affecting “Empty Husk”; the organ-touched “The Long Mirror of Time”; the kaleidoscopic “Rhythmic Blood”; and the natural-laden “Gleaming Sects of Aniram.” Yet again, Daniel Romano escapes being pigeonholed and refuses to disappoint on another top-notch release. – Written by JFelton
