Salt Lake City, Utah singer/songwriter Daniel Young has been making music for the past twenty years and all of that commitment and hard work has paid off with his latest 10 song collection, Television Static. A talented multi-instrumentalist, Young plays many of the instruments on his albums including 6 and 12 string acoustic guitar, electric guitar, steel guitar, synth, percussion, and harmonica on top of producing and engineering the album himself. Young’s third studio album was recorded live to tape over two days at his Orchard Studio and features themes of loss and redemption, grief, and stabs at rebirth. Television Static is a satisfying mix of country, folk and desert rock that draws heavily from Grateful Dead style psychedelic jams to the cosmic country of the late great Gram Parsons and melodic Laurel Canyon vibes. Album highlights include: the rousing opening track “The Dust Settles”; the gentle tearjerker “Clean Cut”; the love ballad “Diamonds in Your Eyes”; the contemplative title-track; the dusty blues-tinged rocker “Moments Like These”; the special guest filled track with guitarist Sadler Vaden (Jason Isbell) and organist Trevor Nealon (The Band of Heathens) on “The World Ain’t Gonna Wait”; the beautiful “No Swim”; and the closing heartbreaker “Pretty Soon Ain’t Enough (To Get You Off My Mind).” Daniel Young’s Television Static release is a satisfying listen. If you’ve never heard of him, be sure to give his music a listen. – Written by JFelton
