David Kilgour, known for being in the band Clean and as a solo artist over the years, is back with a new release on Merge, Left By Soft. Recorded in less than a month near Kilgour’s hometown of Dunedin with the Heavy Eights, Kilgour said he thinks the album “sounds like the band on a good night, warts and all.” Left By Soft definitely has the confidence of a seasoned veteran; each song has its own pace and nothing sounds forced or contrived. It starts off with a casual instrumental track before heading into more classic rock territory with “Way Down Here.” Kilgour’s guitarwork is top notch – he says just as much in his guitar solos as he does in his vocals. Standouts include “Pop Song,” “Diamond Mine” and “A Break in the Weather.” – Written by DBosket
