Trampled by Turtles founder Dave Simonett is out with Furnace, the latest under his project Dead Man Winter. Furnace is a melancholy break-up album that chronicles the end of marriage and a fractured family — an album so personal and difficult Simonett wasn’t sure it would be released. That being said, he made the right choice because the album is excellent. Cut live-to-tape in rural Minnesota, Furnace pairs heartbroken storytelling with polished acoustics. Standout tracks include: the wrenching “Destroyer”; the stark and melancholy “Cardinal”; “Red Wing Blue Wing”; and the solemn “Weight of the World.” In spite of the heartache and pain, Furnace reminds us that beauty can be salvaged from the ruins. – Written by JFelton
