The Santa Cruz based Americana/roots band The Devil Makes Three is back with their infectious blend of bluegrass, old-timey country, folk, blues, jazz, and ragtime on their fifth studio release Chains Are Broken. For this album, the trio officially adds touring drummer Stefan Amidon as part of the band and this inclusion rounds out The Devil Makes Three’s sound. Additionally, for Chains Are Broken the band worked with producer Ted Hutt (Lucero, Old Crow Medicine Show) to polish some of the group’s rougher punk edges for a smoother sound. Notable tracks include: the catchy opening track “Chains Are Broken”; the boot stomper “Pray for Rain”; the twangy rambler “All Is Quiet”; the rocker “Paint My Face”; the upbeat “Can’t Stop”; and the James Baldwin inspired “Native Son.” All in all, Chains Are Broken is another excellent The Devil Makes Three record that will please fans and critics alike! – Written by JFelton
