On Devotchka’s first full-length album since 2011’s 100 Lovers, I’ve heard an apt description of the album as falling “somewhere between the marching troubadour worldliness of Beirut and the grandeur of Arcade Fire.” This Night Falls Together is another stunning collection of songs from Devotchka showcasing their cinematic blend of cabaret, spaghetti Westerns, Norteño (fast paced northern Mexican folk music), Eastern Europe dance music, and indie rock with varied instrumentations and excellent songwriting. Album highlights include: the striking opening track, “Straight Shot”; the beautifully haunting waltz “Let Me Sleep;” the elegant single “Empty Vessels”; the brooding “My Little Despot”; the catchy rocker “Angels”; the gorgeous operatic “Lose You in the Crowd”; and the beautiful yet somber closing track, “Second Chance.” This Night Falls Forever is easily one of the year’s most beautiful, ambitious and gripping albums and everything we’ve come to expect from a new Devotchka release. – Written by JFelton
