For shame! I’ll admit that it was only recently that I was introduced to the Flat Duo Jets, the mighty rockabilly/surf/garage punk band fronted by Dexter Romweber, and thankfully there is no turning back. While the Flat Duo Jets is well in Romweber’s rearview mirror, he continues to influence the underground scene with the help of his sister Sara on the duo’s second full length, Is That You in the Blue? Featuring over 14 originals and sensational covers, the album is a triumph of wholly American sounds of rockabilly, psycho surf, blues, and twisted pop with Dexter full throttle on guitar (as well as the occasional organ) and Sara on drums and guests chiming in on guitar and sax. The list of covers is surprisingly long, but it reads like a who’s who of rockabilly history and makes for a great introduction to artists virtually unknown outside of the genre, like Big John Taylor, Billy Boy Arnold, Benny Joy, Myron Lee and Shari K. Sheeley. The Dex Romweber Duo have a freshly retro sound that revels in the details and executes with passion and sincerity. Do yourself (and others) a favor – put Is That You in the Blue? in your rotation now. – Written by SMarx
