Toronto singer/songwriter Donovan Woods is back with The Widowmaker, the follow-up to 07’s The Hold Up which established him as an accomplished storyteller. The Widowmaker debuts 12 songs of increasing complexity and instrumentation, expanding beyond his characteristic acoustic guitar and hardened vocals. Woods’ lyrics are witty, honest and at times explicit, striking a chord with listeners on topics as mundane as what it is like to be a nice guy in a way that doesn’t trivialize. From the banjo and piano opener “Jail” to the plaintive, lo-fi acoustic “Lord I’m Tryin’”, to the harmonica laden “Let Go Lightly”, “The Widowmaker” profiles the voice of a great vocal talent on this exceptional sophomore effort. – Written by JFelton
