Twenty-four year old Virginian and Appalachian singer/songwriter Dori Freeman’s self-titled debut album is nothing short of spell-binding. Produced by Teddy Thompson (son of Richard and Linda Thompson) and written entirely by Freeman, the album is a collection of heartbreaking love songs filled with deep lyrics layered with meaning, dreamy melodies, and polished arrangements. The album was recorded in just three days in New York City and enlisted artists like: Jon Graboff (The Cardinals) on guitar and steel guitar, Jeff Hill on bass, jazz pianist Erik Deutsch (Norah Jones, Rosanne Cash), drummer Rob Walbourne (Pernice Brothers), and violinist Alex Hargreaves (Sarah Jarosz). Standouts include: the country tinged love songs “You Say”, “Any Wonder”, and the gorgeous “Lullaby”; the a cappella “Ain’t Nobody”; and the sixties girl group inspired like “Tell Me” and “Fine Fine Fine.” The result is one of the most solid and commanding debut records I’ve heard in a while; one that truly showcases an incredibly promising young new talent. – Written by JFelton
