San Francisco-based singer/songwriter Forest Sun follows up 2019’s Brighter Day with Stubborn Breathing Heart – an album that combines elements of blues, r&b, soul, reggae, country, and gospel. Stubborn Breathing Heart showcases Sun’s warm, honeyed vocals alongside storytelling and musical arrangements that are heartfelt, introspective, and spirited. The album was produced by Gawain Mathews (Mickey Hart Band, Tony Furtado Band) and features a number of special guests including Hannah Meyers (The Bittersweets), percussionist Rob Hooper (Seth Walker, Hot Buttered Rum) and last but not least Sun’s longtime collaborators: saxophonist Alex Budman (Mavis Staples, Elvis Costello), trombonist Adam Theis (Jazz Mafia), jazz/blues singer/songwriter Lara Louise, and filmmaker and musician Ingrid Serban. Notable tracks include: the rambling reggae opening number “Keep On Rollin’”; the uplifting gospel-tinged “Where Is My Home”; the upbeat reggae track “Let Your Love Shine”; the pensive country flecked single “Just Because You Want It”; the re-working of Chris Kenner’s soul classic “Something You Got”; the warm acoustic number “What It Takes”; and the beautiful closing track “On My Way To You.” Forest Sun’s Stubborn Breathing Heart is another great listen and welcome addition to his already excellent discography. – Written by JFelton
