Ontario-based singer-songwriter Fred Eaglesmith is out with his nineteenth album of striking alt-country, 6 Volts. The Canadian troubadour follows-up 2010’s Cha Cha Cha with a quieter, lo-fi sound (guitar and drums with bits of pedal steel, banjo and organ) recorded live with one microphone onto reel-to-reel. The result is an intimate, stripped down sound that strikes the right tone for his finely constructed narratives about poetic characters – the damaged, lost, lonely and weary. Eaglesmith’s authenticity in both sound and story make 6 Volts another excellent addition to his accomplished and critically undervalued discography. – Written by JFelton
