Haley Heynderickx – I Need to Start a Garden

  • October 24, 2018

Portland, Oregon based indie folk singer/songwriter Haley Heynderickx follows her independently released 2016’s EP, Fish Eyes, with her critically acclaimed full-length debut, I Need to Start a Garden. Heynderickx’s music draws upon a wide range of sources including her religious Filipino-American upbringing, jazz, 1960s/’70s folk music and the unconventional guitar styles of Leo Kottke and John Fahey. The culmination of these influences makes for an album that refuses to be predictable stylistically and is both lighthearted and introspective. Accordingly, the garden is a central theme throughout this album and it’s filled all kinds of nature – bees, birds and bugs. Notable tracks include: the introspective breakup song “No Face”; the re-imagination of God in “Untitled God Song”; the imaginative tale “The Bug Collector”; the lead single and nod to girl bands of the 60’s, “Oom Sha La La”; the eight-minute Modest Mouse-esque “Worth It”; and the tribute to a departed friend, “Jo.” I Need to Start a Garden is a very creative, fresh sounding and diverse album from a talented up-and-coming musician. – Written by JFelton
