Led by singer-guitarist Joey Siara, LA’s The Henry Clay People are back with a five-track EP, This Is A Desert. It starts off guns blazing with “The Honey Love He Sells,” a fast-paced punk track full of attitude and energy, and then downshifts slightly to the excellent “California Wildfire” — a great track that fuses the slacker attitude of Pavement and the energy of classic Weezer. “The Winter Song” is a beer-soaked ballad that uses some spacey effects and distorted guitars that keep it from becoming a cliché, while title track picks up the pace before closing with “It Isn’t the Waiting,” a nice song that moves at a patient pace and allows Siara to give his vocals some room to breathe. The result is a song that invites the listener to really soak in all the elements and appreciate the strengths and charms of this band. – Written by DBosket
