High expectations abound when a band lands the cover of a major music magazine prior to the release of even just one EP. Such is the case with The Horrors, the young British band who glossed the cover of NME six months before their debut record of garage rock goth-punk, Strange Houses, dropped in March 2007. The camera ready crew has since been producing steadily, releasing their third full length, Skying, in July. Fortunately The Horrors’ meteoric rise has given way to an evolution that matches their promise. Recorded and produced in their London studio, the 10 song album (plus a bonus track on the US digital version) explores the sounds and textures of 80’s new wave and 90’s shoegaze, paying homage to influences like OMD, Simple Minds, My Bloody Valentine. Frontman Faris Badwan’s vocals progressed as well, finding more sure-footing and refinement. Be sure to check out Skying to see what all the hype is about and be prepared to be won over. – Written by SMarx
