Relatively unknown Nashville-based musician Ian Ferguson has made a big impression with his debut album State of Gold – a DIY basement gem of nostalgic psych-pop. Ferguson is a rare talent that recorded, played, mixed, engineered and produced their album with virtually no help from others. Recorded at his mom’s house with an old jerry-rigged computer, which added to the album’s edgy, retro-influenced sound, Ferguson also self-mixed/engineered/produced the labor of love. Album standouts include: the Kinks inspired title-track; the sunshiny, twang-tinged “Love Crime”; the hazy Harry Nilsson-esque “I Do Not Mind”; the melodically Beatle-esque “All My Days”; the woozy socio-political “Tyrant’s Waltz”; the warped dream waltz “Late Last Night”; and the mellow “I Fell Asleep Before the Night Began.” Ferguson takes on the psychedelic 60’s sounds while making them sound fresh and inviting all over again. – Written by JFelton
