Israel Nash recorded his latest release Topaz – an expanded version of the 2019 Topaz EP – over the course of a year in his newly self-built Texas Quonset hut recording studio. The latest is also a follow-up to 2018’s full-length Lifted and 2020’s live from Europe album Across the Water. Topaz was co-produced by Adrian Quesada (Black Pumas), and the ten-song collection features well-polished arrangements, introspective lyrics, and focuses on the current socio-political climate while sonically falling somewhere in between Neil Young and Muscle Shoals soul. Standout tracks include: the soulful socio-political opening track “Dividing Lines”; the bluesy country rocker “Down In The Country”; the laidback soulful number “Southern Coasts”; the soulful track “Stay”; the Neil Young-esque folk-soul song “Canyonheart”; the track about the worst mass shooting in the history of Texas “Sutherland Springs”; and the closing track “Pressure.” Topaz is another great record and enjoyable listen from Israel Nash. – Written by JFelton
