Ivan Rosenberg’s Oldies and Old Time is an enjoyable attempt at making old time music more palatable for the average listener while infusing some of America’s musical roots like country, blues, folk and gospel. By introducing minimalist dobro, resophonic and clawhammer banjo arrangements and familiar sounding melodies on the album, Rosenberg melds traditional front porch Americana with more contemporary sounds over the course of several traditional standards, a few original tracks, and a couple of Willie Nelson covers. Rosenberg’s covers of Eddy Arnold’s “You Don’t Know Me” and Mel Torme/Bob Wells’ “The Christmas Song” sound right at home next to sparse instrumentals, Doc Watson’s timeless ballad “Roving on a Winter’s Night”, and his charming original song “Abject Woodchuck.” Rosenberg’s music is always a delight and and the same can be said about Oldies and Old Time. – Written by JFelton
