Texas native by way of Nashville singer/songwriter Jarrod Dickenson follows up 2019’s Under a Texas Sky with his third album Ready the Horses, which was recorded live in a studio in southeast England. With a bent towards the soulful music of 1960’s era Stax Records and Muscle Shoals, Ready the Horses features spirited horns, gospel-style organ, and R&B influences that make for a polished country-soul album. Standout tracks include: the gospel tinged opening track “Faint of Heart”; the love song/sweet duet with his wife on “Your Heart Belongs to Me”; the R&B influenced ballad of “Take It from Me”; the rousing Paul Simon-esque “Way Past Midnight”; the dirty and swampy Tom Waits-like “Gold Rush”; the folk-blues heartbreaker “California”; the soulful meditation “In the Meantime”; and the bittersweet acoustic waltz “A Cowboy and the Moon.” Jarrod Dickenson hits his sweet spot of bluesy soulful country culminating in a timeless and polished record. – Written by JFelton
