Since his departure from the southern country rock band the Drive-By Truckers in 2007, Jason Isbell has released a number of great albums. However, it is only in recent years, following sobriety and beginning with 2013’s acclaimed LP Southeastern, that the Alabama-born singer/songwriter has realized his fullest potential. His latest, Something More Than Free, is another collection of eleven polished songs that capture the everyday lives of southern folks and also showcases Isbell’s maturing storytelling and songcraft talents. A few notable tracks include: the reflective opener “If It Takes a Lifetime”; the blue collar lament of the title track; the tune about escaping a dead-end life “Speed Trap Town”; the lead single “24 Frames”; and the love ballad “Flagship.” Jason Isbell is easily one of the most revered Americana singer/songwriter of his generation and Something More Than Free is simply one of the best albums of the year. – Written by JFelton
