Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy follows-up 2018 Warm and 2019’s Warmer with his fourth solo outing Love Is the King – an album produced during the pandemic and backed by his two sons Spencer and Sam. Where Tweedy’s first solo release Sukierae dealt with themes about coping with tragedy and Warm and Warmer were about finding some comfort in troubling times, Love Is the King encompasses all of those themes in addition to anxieties and hope. Notable tracks in this laidback collection of folk, country and roots rock include: the twangy country ballad “Opaline”; the meditation on death and reincarnation on ”A Robin or a Wren”; the ode to Tweedy’s wife is a hushed dreamlike folk ballad “Even I Can See”; the upbeat fun-loving folk track “Natural Disaster”; the ambling soulful track “Gwendolyn”; the smoldering “Bad Day Lately”; and the infectiously jaunty “Guess Again.” Jeff Tweedy’s Love Is the King is a personal reaction to this increasingly difficult moment in America’s history. It embraces the darkness of the times while emerging more hopeful. – Written by JFelton
