Jessica Lea Mayfield – Make My Head Sing

  • August 6, 2014

After recording two albums with Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys), singer/songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield decided to co-produced Make My Head Sing with her husband, bassist Jesse Newport. Make My Head Sing marks a dramatic shift form the bluegrass she grew up playing and the rootsy Americana on her first two albums towards a reverb soaked, heavily guitar distorted indie rock album that’s informed by bands like Nirvana, Cat Power and Low. Standouts include: the grinding slowcore tracks “Oblivious”, “Pure Stuff” and “Unknown Big Secret”; the Low-esque “Party Drugs”; and the single “Seein’ Starz.” While the songs that comprise Make My Head Sing are darker, hazy and sometimes abrasive – its not a perfect album – Mayfield’s latest does show a very talented young musician stepping out of the box and taking risks. I look forward to seeing where Mayfield takes her music next. – Written by JFelton
