Sixty year-old Americana/roots singer-songwriter Jim White has lived an eclectic life in which he has been homeless, a surfer, a model, a boxer, a cab driver, an author, producer, filmmaker, photographer, preacher, and a comedian. In the years since 2012’s Where It Hits You, White seems more impassioned than ever on his latest release Waffles, Triangles and Jesus – another excellent collection showcasing his off-kilter storytelling with a mix of country, gospel, bluegrass, folk and Appalachian music. Rich with themes that are sometimes humorous, hopeful, and ripe with heartache and continued struggles with the Pentecostal Christianity he was raised with, Waffle, Triangles and Jesus is about accepting where life takes you. Standout tracks include: the haunting banjo and opening track, “Drift Away”; an interesting reworking of the previously released 2007 song “Long Long Day”; the hopeful and upbeat “Silver Threads”; the jazz touched “Prisoner’s Dilemma”; the achingly beautiful “Sweet Bird of Mystery”; and the lighthearted Andy Griffith Show inspired “Earnest T. Bass at Last Finds the Woman of His Dreams.” Jim White is one of the most underrated Americana musicians out there and his music is consistently polished, intelligent, and filled with top-notch songwriting and story craft. Waffles, Triangles and Jesus is an excellent addition to White’s catalog of albums. – Written by JFelton
