Singer/songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist John Calvin Abney follows-up his 2018 release, Coyote, with Safe Passage – an introspective album that employs confessional soul-bearing lyrics with gentle Americana/roots arrangements. The self-produced effort features John Moreland, Shonna Tucker (Drive-by Truckers), and Will Johnson (Centro-Matic, Monsters of Folk) among the supporting guest musicians who helped bring Abney’s vision to life. Standout tracks include: the tender opening track “I Just Want to Feel Good”; the laidback folk song “Kind Days”; the slow moving “Honest Liar”; the poignant “Backwards Swing”; the rambling track “Turn Again”; the catchy harmonic-driven “When the Dark Winds Blow”; the Beach Boys-esque “Days of Disconnect”; the achingly beautiful “Typeface in Bold”; the lilting instrumental “Soft Rain After All”; and the mellow indie folk closing track “Maybe Happy.” John Calvin Abney’s Safe Passage is an excellent polished album and if you’ve not heard of Abney I encourage you to check out his other albums. – Written by JFelton
