After six albums in a five-year span as the drummer for Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog, Juston Stens decided it was time to go back to his guitar and piano and write his own songs. The result is a self-titled EP from Juston Stens and the Get Real Gang, five tracks that are definitively not an extension of Dr. Dog’s Beatles/hippie-infused harmonies and compositions. Stens’ songs are more rooted in classic ‘70s rock, with some hints of California surf guitar in “Outta Here” and shades of a soulful Van Morrison in “Lonely Lonely Night.” No newcomer to fronting his own bands, Stens has a rich, suave voice that recalls Scott Walker, and a confidence that can be felt in each track. Let’s hope we see a full-length from this guy in the near future. – Written by DBosket
