Kevin Gordon – one of the most underappreciated Americana musicians outside of Nashville – follows-ups 2015’s Long Gone Time with another excellent album, Tilt & Shine. Gordon was raised in Louisiana and earned a master’s degree in poetry from the University of Iowa Writers Workshop before moving to Nashville where he became a successful local songwriter. Tilt & Shine was produced by longtime collaborator Joe McMahan (Lilly Hiatt, Allison Moorer) and together they polish Gordon’s mix of southern gothic tales with swampy juke joint blues. Album highlights include: the opening track “Fire at the End of the World”; “Gatling Gun” which features Aaron Lee Tasjan on backing vocals; the vivid “Saint on a Chain”; the juke joint boogie of “One Road Out (Angola Rodeo Blues)”; the catchy drinking song “Drunkest Man in Town”; and the stripped-down “Rest Your Head.” Tilt & Shine is an excellent album and in my opinion one of Gordon’s best. – Written by JFelton
