2020 was a probably a year most of us would love to forget due to how hard the year was. Nevertheless, singer/songwriter Langhorne Slim (Sean Scolnick) had an especially difficult year. Scolnick’s struggle with anxiety, depression, and staying sober with all of the home isolation Covid caused proved to be a difficult task. To cope, Scolnick followed a friend’s advice to try and write a song a day which resulted in a creative surge that led to the 19-track collection of songs comprising his seventh studio album, Strawberry Mansion. The new LP is one of Scolnick’s most personal albums with themes of mental health, addiction, loneliness, and spirituality, all gathered into a lively set of candid, edgy folk songs. Standout tracks include: the upbeat opening track, “Mighty Soul”; the bright and hopeful song about anxiety “Panic Attack”; the nostalgic nod to his Philly childhood on “Strawberry Mansion”; the ditty about loneliness and isolation, “Lonesome Time”; the smart, catchy track “For The Children”; the folky toe-tapper “Alright to Hide”; the bluesy vibed “High Class;” the witty folk number “Red Bird”; the lazy, singalong “Summer Days”; the twinkling ode to the girl of his dreams on “Colors”; the humorous “Blood on Yer Lips”; and the soulful spiritual “House On Fire.” Langhorne Slim’s Strawberry Mansion is a great remedy for the hard times we live in, and one of Scolnick’s best albums to date – truly a great listen. – Written by JFelton
