Leon III (“Leon the Third”) is the side project of Andy Stepanian and Mason Brent of the Wrinkle Neck Mules, a Virginia alt-country band. Here on their self-titled debut LP, the duo create their own brand of Americana/country roots with a psychedelic edge. Stepanian (vocals) and Brent (guitar) are joined by the talented likes of Jordan Caress (backing vocals), Tony Crow (piano), Pete Finney (pedal steel), Brian Kotzur (drums), and Chris Scruggs (guitar; and yes – the grandson of Earl). Produced in Nashville by Mark Nevers (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy; Andrew Bird, Candi Staton, Silver Jews) with the Grateful Dead as one of their muses, and themes that touch on searching and living, these hazy tracks take their time yet each hit their stride.
