Lucero – Among the Ghosts

  • September 21, 2018

Memphis, TN based country punk band Lucero follow-up 2015’s All a Man Should Do with their 11th release Among the Ghosts which is a return to the grittier darker side of their music. On this collection of songs, Lucero focuses on themes of family, lost love, death, wartime separation, loneliness, and other emotional hardships through introspective, honest and poignant songwriting. For Among the Ghosts the band enlisted producer Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price, Drive-By Truckers) and recorded the album at Sam Phillips Recording Service in Memphis, a studio that has plenty of history, tales, and ghosts of its own. Notable tracks include: the opening title-track; the macabre “Bottom of the Sea”; the stripped-down ballad “Always Been You”; the heartland rocker “Everything Has Changed”; the touching “To My Dearest Wife”; and the scorching rocker “For the Lonely Ones.” Among the Ghosts is one of Lucero’s best albums and sound reflects the polish of a 20-year journey together as a band while demonstrating just how smart and versatile they can be. – Written by JFelton
