The Memphis-based act Lucero has made a 20+ year career out of mixing punk, classic soul, folk, and country and with their 10th studio album, When You Found Me, the band went for a 1980’s classic rock sound that brings to mind Bob Seager and Tom Petty. Ben Nichols’ inspiration for the LP evolved out of soundtracks from movies he and his brother watched as kids as well as his soundtrack work for his brother’s films 2012’s Mud and 2016’s Loving, resulting in a cinematic slow-burning album. When You Found Me was recorded over two-plus weeks this past summer during the middle of the global pandemic at Sam Phillips Recording Studio. Album standouts include: the eerie opening track “Have You Lost Your Way?”; the slow-burner “Bourbon and Coca-Cola”; the Southern Gothic tale “The Match”; the rousing horn-heavy track “Back in Ohio”; and the haunting rocker “Good as Gone.” When You Found Me showcases Lucero’s ability to kick out the jams while making poignant and insightful statements about the times we live in. – Written by JFelton
