Animator is the third, and latest, full-length release from Montreal indie rock quintet, The Luyas. This time around the band understandably replace their usual upbeat, echoey pop and pep for somber reflections and serious experimentations, as the album was created in response to the unexpected death of a close friend. What results is a cathartic set of songs that hold in tight tension mood and atmosphere, with orchestrations that alternately sync with and stand in opposition to the melodies. The Luyas include Sara Neufeld (violin, Arcade Fire) and Pietro Amato (horns, Bell Orchestre), Mathieu Charbonneau, Bucky Wheaton, and Jessie Stein (vocals, guitar) and are joined by Jace Lasek (Besnard Lakes) in the mixing studio.
