Matt Andersen – Halfway Home by Morning

  • October 24, 2019

The 10th album from acclaimed New Brunswick Canadian soul/bluesman Matt Andersen, Halfway Home By Morning, was recorded “live off the floor” at Southern Ground Studio in Nashville, resulting in 13 original tracks that seamlessly mix elements of country, rock, soul and Americana with an underscore of the blues. Andersen is a big man with a big heart and a very strong voice, and whether conveying love, heartache or loss, he infuses honesty and sincere emotion into each song. Notable tracks include: the opening country rocker “What Would Your Mother Say?”; the churning R&B on “Give Me Some Light”; the blues-funk vibe if “Free Man”; The Muscle Shoals-tinged “Better Than You Want”; the Amy Helm country ballad duet “Something To Lose”; the 60s’ soul-inspired “The Bed I Made”; the upbeat sing-along “Long Rider”; the gospel blues of “Over Me”; and the uplifting closing track, “Quarter On The Ground (A Song For Uncle Joe).” Andersen has won two European Blues Awards, seven Maple Blues Awards, and a JUNO Award nomination and his commanding voice and polished songwriting again culminate into a practically flawless album. – Written by JFelton
