North Carolina native Michael Holland is backed by the Occoneechee String Band on his fourth solo album Rhythm of Love. Holland is best known for his role in the indie roots rock band Jennyanykind as well as a pioneer of “new weird America” – a subgenre of psychedelic and indie music that is partially derived from old time sounds. With the core group of Lightnin’ Wells (multiple instruments), John Garris (fiddle), and FJ Ventre (upright bass), and backed by vocalists Andrea Connolly, Emily Frantz, and Kyra Moore (all formerly of Sweet By and By), Rhythm of Love explores love and existence over the course of 12 original songs (plus the bonus track “East Colorado Blues”, a version of Mississippi John Hurt’s “Spike Driver Blues”). Holland’s take on traditional music – complete with Piedmont style thumb-picking – yields a wonderful collection; Rhythm of Love is an album for Americana fans. – Written by JFelton
