Austin-based sextet Mike and the Moonpies’ Steak Night at the Prairie Rose is another polished mix of traditional country, outlaw country, honky-tonk, and Southern rock. Mike and the Moonpies have been kicking around for a decade with five titles under their belt, all top-notch records that keep getting better with each release. Steak Night at the Prairie Rose is no exception and may be their best album yet. Notable tracks include: the opening track “Road Crew”; the gambler’s lament “Beaches of Biloxi”; the shuffling waltz “Might Be Wrong”; the poignant title-track; the cover of Austinite Terrell’s “The Last Time”; the fuzzed out southern rocker “Things Ain’t Like They Used to Be”; and the lighthearted “Wedding Band.” Steak Night at the Prairie Rose is a very enjoyable listen and well worth seeking out. – Written by JFelton
