The Milk Carton Kids – All the Things That I Did and All the Things That I Didn’t Do
The California duo of singer/songwriters Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan (The Milk Carton Kids) tap into a successful formula set by the Everly Brothers and Simon & Garfunkel: two guitars, impeccable harmonies, and melodies that combine nostalgia with moments of introspection and sentimentality. The band’s latest effort, All the Things That I Did and All the Things That I Didn’t Do, was produced by Joe Henry (Bonnie Raitt, Bettye Lavette, Elvis Costello) a skilled singer/songwriter in his own right, and here he helps the bank expand their sound instrumentally without detracting from their core strengths. Album highlights include: the melancholic opening track “Just Look at Us Now”; the Simon and Garfunkel-esque ballad “Younger Years”; the tender gem “You Break My Heart”; the ten-minute-plus opus “One More for the Road”; the lively “Big Time”; and the gently mournful closing track “I’ve Been Loving You.” All-in-all, another excellent and polished folk album from The Milk Carton Kids. – Written by JFelton
