Okkervil River – The Silver Gymnasium

  • November 8, 2013

Austin, TX based indie band Okkervil River is out with their seventh album, The Silver Gymnasium, which takes its inspiration from singer Will Sheff’s childhood in the small New Hampshire town of Meriden. While The Silver Gymnasium is an extremely detailed autobiography, the music evokes the essence of what it was like to grow-up in 80’s small town America. A few of the highlights among the eleven tracks are: the opener “It Was My Season”; expansive yet tragic “Down Down the Deep River”; the new wave-esque “Stay Young”; the mesmerizing “Walking Without Frankie”; and the twangy rocker “White.” The Silver Gymnasium is one of Okkervil River’s most polished efforts while also retaining the intensity and edginess of previous albums. It’s sure to please new and old listeners alike. – Written by JFelton
