Sam Doores (The Deslondes, Hurray for the Riff Raff) recorded his self-titled debut solo release at locations around the world, including Berlin, Nashville, and his hometown of New Orleans. Doores wrote this collection of songs intermittently over the course of several years, resulting in a great blend of traditional southern roots music, New Orleans-style R&B, and some touches psychedelia. The LP was produced by Anders “Ormen” Christopherson, who brought together New Orleans jazz mainstays Tuba Skinny and Mat Davidson (Twain), as well as Doores’ former bandmate Alynda Lee Segarra (Hurray for the Riff Raff) to contribute on the album. Notable tracks include: the duet with Alynda Segarra on “Other Side Of Town”; the laidback rambler “Let It Roll”; the contemplative atmospheric track “Cambodian Rock n’ Roll”; the fingerpicked guitar and harmonica based folk song “Windmills”; the lilting Latin flavored waltz “Nothing Like a Suburb”; the moody swamp rock “Solid Road”; and the catchy closing track “Chicago to Illinois.” First, if you don’t know The Deslondes, you should definitely check them out. And as for this specific release, Sam Doores’ debut is an adventurous, eclectic, and polished album from an artist who will undoubtedly continue to refine and expand his palette. – Written by JFelton
