Sam Evian wasn’t about to start recording his fourth album, “Plunge,” in a conventional way. Instead, he threw a party. In the crisp January air of 2023, nestled amongst the Catskill Mountains, Evian’s Flying Cloud Studios, transformed from a worn space to a rustic haven, became the backdrop for a festive gathering. Friends and fellow musicians like Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief and Sufjan Stevens joined the celebration, Lenker bearing a gift of maple syrup from Vermont and Stevens lighting up the winter sky with fireworks. As the clock struck midnight, the group took a symbolic plunge into a nearby creek, washing away the old year and embracing the new with a burst of joyful energy.
This spirit of camaraderie and spontaneity carried over into the recording sessions that began the following day. Joined by a close-knit group of collaborators including Sean Mullins, El Kempner of Palehound, and of course, Adrianne Lenker, Evian embarked on a ten-day exploration of sound. Eschewing the sterility of overdubs and multiple takes, the sessions embraced a loose and improvisational approach. “We kept it loose and fun,” Evian explains. “No headphones, no playback, minimal overdubs.” This raw, unfiltered energy is a hallmark of “Plunge.”
The album delves into deeply personal territory for Evian. Inspired by the beauty of the Catskills and the creative energy fostered by his collaborators, “Plunge” explores themes of family and history. The lead single, “Wild Days,” offers a poignant reflection narrated from his mother’s perspective, weaving together the complexities of family dynamics with a shared love of music.
“Plunge” marks a distinct turning point for Sam Evian. It’s the first release on his own imprint, Flying Cloud Recordings, signifying a new chapter of artistic independence. With the help of talented friends and a commitment to capturing the essence of live performance, Evian has crafted an album that is both deeply personal and infectiously energetic. “Plunge” is set for release on March 22nd, 2024, and promises to be a captivating journey into the heart and soul of this gifted musician. – Jason Felton
