North Carolina native and singer/songwriter Sarah Siskind follows her 2015 release In the Mountains with Modern Appalachia – a deeply affecting introspective album. Modern Appalachia brings together thoughtful songwriting about Appalachian life and fusion jazz-inspired arrangements. A number of the songs are based on Siskind’s experience moving from Nashville back to her ancestral home in North Carolina to provide a “simpler life” for her family. Siskind is a seasoned Nashville musician who launched a successful solo career in addition to writing for songs for Alison Krauss, Gabe Dixon, Randy Travis, and so many others in addition to 20+ tracks on the soundtrack for the TV show Nashville. Standout tracks on her latest LP are: the driving mid-tempo track featuring Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) on vocals “Carolina”; the beautiful “In the Mountains”; the heartbreaker “Porchlight”; the country rocker “A Little Bit Troubled”; the folk-pop track “Danny”; the title-track featuring Bill Frisell on guitar; the nostalgic number “Punk Rock Girl”; and the album closer – the lovely lullaby “I Won’t Stop.” Sarah Siskind’s Modern Appalachia is a refreshing and progressive take on Appalachian music that features elements of jazz and progressive rock guitars. – Written by JFelton
