Smith Westerns do their own take on garage rock and adolescent fervor on their self-titled debut, re-issued on Fat Possum. The album contains 10 tracks about girls, girls, and well, girls. In their defense, these four musicians from the Windy City are between 17 and 19 years old, and have opened for up-and-coming band Girls. Smith Westerns have a flair for mixing glam and garage, channeling T-Rex on several tracks and reminding everyone that this music is not just meant to be admired and remembered, but played and kept alive now. There’s a lot to like about this album, particularly the tightly written songs and unpolished, raw energy that comes through in each track. – Written by DBosket
