Following in the footsteps of legendary producer T Bone Burnett and fellow contemporary Ethan Johns (Emmylou Harris, Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne) before him, Dave Cobb has become one of premier producers in Americana music. The Southern Family project is a loose concept album that pays homage to the south and was inspired by the 1978 album White Mansions: A Tale From the American Civil War. Cobb tapped some of his favorite artists like: Anderson East, Chris Stapleton (Steeldrivers), Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown, Jason Isbell, John Paul White (Civil Wars), Rich Robinson (Black Crowes), Shooter Jennings and others to perform covers and originals with themes of nostalgia, family heritage and southern living. Highlights include: “Simple Song” performed by John Paul White; Miranda Lambert’s “Sweet By and By”; Jason Isbell’s “God Is a Working Man”; the bluesy cover of “You Are My Sunshine” by Morgane and Chris Stapleton; and “Grandma’s Garden” performed by Zac Brown. This stripped down collection of showcases how rich and complex southern culture and music can be. – Written by JFelton
