Steve Gunn – The Unseen In Between

  • February 25, 2019

Brooklyn by way of Philadelphia singer/songwriter/guitarist Steve Gunn returns with another excellent set of atmospheric psychedelia with The Unseen In Between – the follow-up to his acclaimed 2016 release, Eyes on the Lines. On this latest, Gunn draws upon a mash-up of influences like J.J. Cale, John Fahey, Jack Rose, Jim O’Rourke and even a bit of Jerry Garcia. Gunn expertly balances rich instrumentation with whirling vocal melodies, resulting in a sound that is pastoral, ethereal or at other times, psychedelic and mesmerizing. The album’s standout tracks include: the folksy opening track “New Moon”; the Meg Baird (Espers) assisted track, “Vagabond”; the tribute to Gunn’s father “Stonehurst Cowboy”; the Pink Floyd-tinged “Morning Is Mended”; the soaring single, “New Familiar”; the twinkling yet pastoral “Lightning Field”; and the spaced-out folk track “Paranoid.” If you are in to other contemporary guitarists who push the limits of their genre like Ryley Walker, Kurt Vile, William Tyler, or Daniel Bachman, then Steve Gunn’s The Unseen In Between will capture your attention. – Written by JFelton
