The Strokes’ fourth album, Angles, shows the band taking a different approach to their music, displaying a slightly more diverse sound and taking some chances. “Under the Cover of Darkness” should keep those wanting another ‘classic’ Strokes song happy, but for the most part, the tracks on Angles have never sounded so varied. Frontman Julian Casablancas – who recorded a lot of his vocals remotely – steps away from his usual sleepy hipster style on “Two Kinds of Happiness,” which sounds strongly indebted to early U2 and has the singer belting out a Bono-like wail. The band sounds very at home in one of the album’s standouts, “Gratisfaction,” a Thin Lizzy-esque track that showcases Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr.’s guitars and Nikolai Fraiture’s bass. Although not their most cohesive album, Angles is one that quickly grows on you with each listen. – Written by DBosket
