The Roseline – Good/Grief

  • July 9, 2020

Lawrence, Kansas heartland Americana band The Roseline (fronted by Colin Halliburton) has evolved from an acoustic three-piece band in 2006 to a five-piece band over the course of five albums. The Roseline’s Good/Grief release is an album written to honor the death of Halliburton’s best friend and band keyboardist, as well as the loss of his mother-in-law due to suicide. The ten-song collection found on Good/Grief captures both expansive spaces and darker themes as Halliburton reflects on family, friends, muses, past experiences, and life. Notable tracks include: the poignant opening track “Better to the Bone”; the mellow country-rock “Pheasant Feather”; the solid Americana gem “Ghost Writer”; the socio/political number about rise of white right-wing American nationalists “Counting Sheep”; the barn-burning rocker “Inside Out”; the country ballad “I Guess That’s Just How It Goes”; the ode to former bandmate in “Song for Ehren [Starks]”; and the California country vibed “Green Flash.” The Roseline’s Good/Grief is a really solid album of captivating, melancholic country rock in the same ilk as The Jayhawks or Ryan Adams earlier work. – Written by JFelton
