The Staves – All Now

  • May 7, 2024

The Staves, a UK sister duo, present their fifth album, “All Now,” as a duo for the first time following Emily Staveley-Taylor’s departure. Despite this change, the group exudes confidence throughout the album, starting with the bold opening track, “All Now,” which sets the tone with its assertive lyrics and transitions from adult contemporary to energetic folk-rock.

While the title track reflects a sense of both excitement and resignation, serving as a thematic primer for the album’s exploration of seizing the present despite past regrets, other tracks delve into themes of desire and connection. Produced once again by John Congleton, known for his work with various artists including St. Vincent and Angel Olsen, “All Now” maintains a similar sonic vibe to its predecessor, “Good Woman,” with Congleton’s signature touches evident, though some may long for a bit more experimentation.

Nevertheless, the album’s second half offers some intriguing variations, such as the intimate “The Important One” and the dynamic shifts of “Great Wave.” The standout track, “After School,” showcases the band’s ability to deliver anthemic energy with classic piano-rock flair. Overall, “All Now” positions The Staves for wider recognition and success, particularly with tracks like “After School” demonstrating their potential to captivate larger audiences. – Jason Felton
